About the Protest:
20th May 2006 (Saturday),
starts at 9:30 AM,
ends before 12 noon

"Death of Meritocracy": Peaceful march with theatrics, banners/placards/slogans with police protection
Origin: ChicLalbagh (near Majestic);
visit http://www.savebrandindia.org/ for route map
Destination: Banappa Park (near KR Market)
Concludes with a public addressing at Banappa Park
Participants: Working people in Bangalore, medical and engineering students

Why we oppose reservation?
1) It is going to kill meritocracy, and hence will destroy India's growing image as a technology hub.
2) It is dividing India into caste lines which our freedom fighters and social reformers fought so hard to eliminate.
3) It is against the fundamental right to equality as safeguarded by the Constitution of India.
4) The benefits of reservation have been denied to really deserving people by the rich and powerful in their own classes.
5) Reservation is just a populist measure used by politicians for electoral gains.

I am sorry, but in a country where millions live below the poverty line, and have for generations faced social discrimination, there have to be some measures of support in place, at least until their economic status is improved. It is an appalling middle-class view to say 'let's not have reservations'. If India is a true democracy, its majority's wishes will be fulfilled. There is nothing that the so-called intelligensia or greedy middle class can do to stop it. You mark my words.

I have a suggestion. The next time we hold a protest march, let us walk up to the embassies of the US, UK, European countries and even pakistan and china, and submit a memorandum to them saying we need asylum in theuir countries as we are being prosecuted in our own. We will pledge to serve our adopted country in the best way possible subject to the only condition that we be granted the dignity that is neing snatched away from us now

Narayan, Nobody here is opposing the reservation for those who are genuinely poor.. What we are opposing is the reservations based on caste.. I know that because on a salary of 2000, my father supported my Engineering and I did not opt for medical simply because our family could not afford it even though I was placed in top 100 in CET..

hey KD
good to read ur comments... well i agree...the govt and the so called heads (having no long term brains) have really shamed us and even the SC intervention has been a major jolt to the efforts of the striking students...its time we motivate the fellow citizens to fight this unjust policy of resurgence of castism in India for merely winning an election...that is a pity....
keep the war going....
take care
